Spring Appeal 2026
Bringing Sight-Saving Care Closer to Home
Imagine not being able to clearly see the face of someone you love.
Imagine needing regular, sight-saving treatment but having to travel hours to get it. Relying on others to drive you. Rearranging your life just to make an appointment.
For many in our community, that was reality.
“This month, (February) we changed that,” said Dr. Douglas Iaboni. “I am thrilled to share that we have officially launched our local anti-VEGF injection clinic right here in Truro. We are finally providing local treatment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye conditions—the leading causes of vision loss”.
To keep the clinic running safely and efficiently, we need your help to secure two critical pieces of equipment: Indirect Ophthalmoscopes.
An ophthalmoscope is a handheld medical instrument used to examine the interior structures of the eye, particularly the retina, optic disc, and vitreous humor. It shines a light through the pupil and utilizes a series of lenses to magnify the back of the eye, allowing ophthalmologists to perform deep, peripheral examinations of the retina before and after every injection. They are the "eyes" an ophthalmologist uses to ensure there are no complications, like retinal tears or detachments, which could permanently threaten a patient’s vision.
Prior to the clinic opening, patients had to travel to Halifax for treatment, which meant additional expenses and arranging for someone to drive you, which may have meant someone had to take time off from work to ensure that the appointment was made.
I am excited to announce that Truro’s Canadian Tire saw the importance of this new clinic. When we shared information about the new clinic and what it needed, Canadian Tire came forward with a lead gift to the campaign of $5,000.
Not everyone can make a gift of $5,000 but you can help us raise the funds to ensure that this clinic is equipped to offer care to patients here at home. Join Canadian Tire today and make your gift.
By supporting this Spring Appeal, you are doing more than just funding equipment. You are:
Removing the Burden of Travel: With costs rising almost daily, the ability to provide care here at home helps relieve stress for patients;
Preserving Independence: This treatment can help patients maintain their vision so they can continue to live on their terms and enjoy things like reading a good book or taking a scenic drive;
Strengthening Local Care: Dr. Rogers and Dr. Iaboni have established a high-quality eye-care program that we hope will continue to meet the needs of our community for years to come. Demand for the anti-VEGF service is already growing. With your support, we can ensure that every patient who walks through the Health Centre doors receives the highest standard of safety and care. Demand for this service is already growing.
We need your help to ensure we can grow this service to meet the needs of our community. Will you help us protect the vision of our community and keep the future looking bright?
Should appeal donations exceed the current amount needed, or if priority needs change, your gift will be used to fund other priority equipment or patent care enhancements for your health centre.
With sincere gratitude,
Sharon Crowe
Executive Director
P.S. Our sight connects us to the moments that matter most—the smile of a grandchild, a familiar face, the freedom to go where we choose. Your gift today helps ensure those moments are not lost.
